Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS)

A spinal cord stimulator—also referred to as a neurostimulation system—is an innovative, minimally-invasive surgical solution for patients whose chronic pain has not responded to traditional pain management therapies.

Our practice was selected as the first on Long Island to provide the first implantable SCS designed for full-body Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) safety. Thus, unlike other SCS systems that must be removed before a body MRI scan, the leading-edge technology that we use with our patients may remain safely in place in the event that a patient needs an MRI scan.

The SCS is a small, battery-powered generator implanted under the skin, where a small wire is placed into the epidural space, adjacent to the nerve fibers of the spinal cord. Depending on the level of pain, the patient can control a pulse generator that sends a low-voltage electrical current to the nerves, disrupting pain signals as needed.

When using the SCS, the pain sensation is alleviated, allowing patients to reduce or eliminate oral pain medications and enjoy a less painful, more active lifestyle.
