Medial Branch Blocks

Medial branch blocks are a type of nerve block that may provide quick pain relief for pain that is rooted in small nerves that feed out from facet joints in the spine.

Often, medial branch blocks are used to help physicians diagnose the source of pain. If pain abates after the patient receives an anesthetic injection near the small medial nerves connected to specific joints, a pain management specialist may recommend a medial branch radiofrequency ablation (or neurotomy) to provide more long-lasting pain relief in the identified area.
